Big Women
in memory of Maya Angelou, 1928-2014
You know the ones I mean,
they puff and whew on a humid-hot day.
You hope they don’t sit next to you
on the skinny-seated bus.
You plan to never be like them.
Now listen here.
These women can cook a whole
chicken and make it last all week,
know how to raise a family,
comfort the ailing, help the needy,
and lift a loud voice to the Lord.
They know all the ways that this world
can pain a child, and why the caged bird sings.
